Windows 7 ends 14th January 2020

26/11/2019

As of the 14th of January 2020, Microsoft will move on from Windows 7 and no longer patch security holes in the operating system. They will no longer provide technical support, software updates, security updates, and fixes. So Windows 7 will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.

Also in the near future, more and more programs will stop working on Windows 7. You will start getting prompts to update your programs, or they'll stop working. Then when you try to update them, you'll get a message saying the latest version can't be installed on Windows 7 anymore.

Windows 7 can't automatically upgrade to Windows 10. Book online, or call Computer Champ on 0430 984 522 to get it done properly, hassle free. Computer Champ backs up your data, tests the health of your hard drive, clean installs the latest version of Windows 10, drivers, updates, assists with putting your favourite programs back and printer, sets up your email again and restores all your files.

Since Windows 10 runs a little slower than Windows 7, optionally installing more memory (RAM) and a solid state drive (SSD) will ensure your computer runs smoothly, without "not responding" sometimes. In most cases, your computer will then run much faster than when it was brand new. So it's much cheaper than buying a new computer which is totally unnecessary.

Transfer your files from a broken computer

4/10/2019

Even if your old computer wont start, Computer Champ can transfer all your documents, pictures, emails etc. to your new computer or external hard drive. Call 0430 984 522 to get it done.  We can also help set up your new computer, Microsoft Office, email, install printers etc. Alternatively Computer Champ can fix your old computer, upgrade it and restore your files too.

Diagnosis:
If a computer doesn't start because it has a conventional (mechanical) (older type) of hard drive (HDD) and it has failed, there's a chance that the files are gone forever. Sometimes a solid state drive (SSD) can corrupt too which deletes the data. However in many cases the files are able to be restored. Sometimes the operating system has corrupted, there may be a virus or a Windows update has caused a driver issue, or the memory (RAM), LCD or motherboard might suddenly become faulty. In all these other cases, the data is able to be restored. Of course, having a backup is going to save you a lot of stress.

How Computer Champ restores the data:
We remove the HDD, or the SSD and connect it to a working computer with a compatible adapter. Then using back up software, move the files to the working computer. Then the data gets scanned for viruses. If the data appears to be missing, then data recovery software is used to restore the files.

Adapters used:
  • 2.5" SATA to USB
  • m.2 SATA to 2.5" SATA
  • m.2 PCIe NVMe to 2.5" SATA
  • mSATA to 2.5" SATA

Fix Gmail in Outlook

8/2/2019

Make sure Google's "Less Secure Apps" setting is turned on, for your Gmail account to work in Outlook.
  1. Open your Chrome browser and go to your Gmail (https://www.google.com/gmail/)
  2. Sign into your Gmail account. Doing this will also let you know if you have the correct password.
  3. On the top right, click on the settings gear icon, then click Settings.
  4. Along the top, click on Accounts and Import.
  5. In the Change account settings section, click on Other Google Account settings.
  6. On the left hand side, click on Security.
  7. Scroll down to the Less secure app access. If it says it's off, then click on Turn on access (not recommended).
  8. Click the toggle switch on. That's it.

Google classifies Outlook as a less secure app, but in reality Outlook is a great email program, so disregard their security warning about this.

You may also need to remove your Gmail account from Outlook, then add it back again.  For more email help, call Computer Champ on 0430 984 522.

Move your libraries location to the large hard drive

13/12/2018

These days, it's common to have a small, but fast SSD and also a large HDD in your desktop computer. Well on a Windows computer, you need to move your libraries (Documents, Pictures etc.) to your HDD, so that when you add a document or picture, it will automatically be stored on your large storage Hard Disk Drive, instead of the smaller Solid State Drive. So you wont run out of storage so easily. Here's how:
  1. Open File Explorer and open your user profile folder (C:\Users\Your username\)
  2. Inside your user profile folder, right click the Contacts folder > Properties > Location tab
  3. In the text field, just change the C to the letter of your hard disk drive (E.g. E), then click OK.
  4. Click Yes to the next prompt, then Yes again.
  5. Now do the same thing for the rest of the user profile folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads etc.) That's it.

If you need help with getting your computer set up properly, call Computer Champ on 0430 984 522.
