Get Windows 10 on your Apple Mac (Dual boot) - Best of both worlds!

26/4/2017

Apple iMac and Macbook Pro dual Boot Windows
If you've got a Mac, you can also put Windows 10 on it, using a built in program called Boot Camp. Once installed, if you hold down the Option/Alt key when your Mac starts, it'll give you the option to start in Windows. Otherwise it'll default to the normal Apple operating system. (Or you can reverse that)

So when Boot Camp is being configured, you can decide how much disk space you want for Windows and how much for macOS. So it's basically a dual boot scenario. You'll need a copy of Windows 10 and your Mac can't be older than 2012.

Call Computer Champ to get this done for you quickly and at a great price, on 0430 984 522. Our price for Windows 10 is unbeatable.

Play old games on your desktop computer / PC - mobile computer repair service in Mile End
So there are some of us "Retro-heads" that like to play those classic, older games. You know the ones that were on those shiny CDs, back in the 32 bit days of Windows 95, through to Windows XP. But many of them wont run on Windows 10. What to do...
  1. Run the game as Administrator
  2. Try using Windows 10 Compatibility Mode
  3. Download a patch or mod for the particular game
  4. Use DOSBox for those really old Dos games
  5. Use Virtual Box and install Windows XP on it

If you need a hand to get that old, favourite game running, call Computer Champ on 0430 984 522.

laptop repairs in Novar Gardens
I can't recommend this enough. I bought one of these for myself, my son and for lots of happy customers. They're light, fast, long lasting, look as new and look good! You wont find a laptop with a 240GB or 480GB solid state drive for this price anywhere else! (Although smaller than a conventional 1TB HDD, these SSDs make the computer significantly faster and don't fail prematurely. Most expensive high end laptops only have a 128GB SSD and cost much more)

Asus laptop for $850
  • i5-6200 (6th Gen) CPU
  • 8GB RAM
  • 240GB SSD (Solid state drive) (or 480GB SSD for $70 more)
  • 15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 display
  • 2GB nVidia Geforce GT920 dedicated graphics card
  • DVD drive
  • Windows 10 Home

Call Computer Champ now on 0430 984 522 and get one of these very nice laptops at an excellent price.

Optional: If you need data transferred from your old computer, email setup, printer installed etc, it's only $80 per hour with a 2 hour cap. Just call 0430 984 522.

"The website wont load, Flash not working!" (1st world problem)

computer repairs in Plympton
So you're favourite website still uses Adobe Flash technology for animations/video, but it wont load, despite you downloading the plugin over and over. Well, that's because Flash is being phased out.

The reason is because Flash is slow and vulnerable to hacking. It has been replaced by HTML5. So websites like YouTube now use this newer technology. But what do you do if your favourite website still only uses Flash...

Web browsers (Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera etc) no longer support Flash by default. However :
  • To enable Flash in Chrome, type chrome://settings/content in the address bar, scroll down to the Flash heading, then click Allow sites to run Flash. Or, click the Manage exceptions... button and add the website to the list. Then click Done. Exit Chrome, then try the website again.
  • In Microsoft Edge click the ... button, go to Settings, scroll down and click the View advanced settings button, then toggle on Use Adobe Flash Player.
  • Or, you can download Firefox's Extended Release Version, which will support Flash until 2018 sometime. Click here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

NBN info - an overview

Fix Internet speed with Adelaide computer repairs at West Beach SA
Once NBN (National Broadband Network) arrives in your area, the existing ADSL service will be disconnected in 18 months. So which type of NBN will you be getting...

  • FTTP (fibre to the premises) The fastest, but very few homes will get this.
  • FTTN/FTTB/FTTC (fibre to the node/fibre to the basement/fibre to the curb) Better than ADSL, because the distance of the low quality copper wire will be shorter, but the speed still degrades over distance from the node/basement/curb to your house/unit. The good news is that it's dedicated, meaning you don't share your bandwidth with your neighbours, so it doesn't get congested during peak times. (Requires a  VDSL2+ modem)
  • HFC (hybrid fibre coaxial) Uses a high quality coaxial cable (like Foxtel's) from the node. This doesn't get affected by distance so it could potentially be faster than FTTN. However, you and your neighbours are sharing the bandwidth which will be noticeable during peak times. But it wont get as congested as a non NBN cable connection. On a top-tier plan, HFC should be faster than cable, especially upload speeds. Also, NBN has more choices of providers, plans and prices. (Requires a cable modem)
  • Fixed wireless. Used in the outskirts. An antenna is installed on your roof that delivers broadband from a dedicated NBN Wireless tower in your area. However some of the bandwidth will be lost to noise and signal degradation.
  • Satellite. Expensive for remote locations.

Call your Internet provider and ask which one you are getting. Once your NBN is up and running, your wireless home network may have changed. If you need help with your wireless printers, give Computer Champ a call on 0430 984 522.
